The Faithful Friend, by Robert D. San Souce and illustrated by Brian Pinkney is based on a West Indies folktale about a loyal friend, Hippolyte, who follows his brother Clement on a quest to ask for Pauline's hand in marriage. This quest is wrought with dangers as they encounter zombies and ghosts. Will Clement, Hippoyte, and Pauline survive? This book is a great one for teaching advanced vocabulary and making predictions in the text for children in the second through fourth grades.
