I am very excited about Of Numbers and Stars: The Story of Hypatia by D. Anne Love. This book is a biography of Hypatia of Alexandria, a genius (female) mathematician who lived during the fourth century B.C. The fact that she was born during a time when women were devalued makes this story an empowering one. Too often today, girls do not like math, or they feel that it caters more to boys. This story debunks that and shows that anyone can like and do well in math. It also shows the necessity of supportive parents. Hypatia and her family broke all cultural norms of the day by giving her the education that boys of her day acquired. She even taught in public forums! Girls who love math need strong female role models, and the story of Hypatia is one that can encourage them.
